'Tanned' Berlusconi heads for US

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's joke about the newly-elected Barack Obama being "young, handsome and sun-tanned" hangs over him on his first visit to Washington since the election.

The gag was widely regarded as offensive. Hundreds of Italians wrote to the New York Times to apologise.

Before boarding his flight on Sunday, Mr Berlusconi made a mischievous reference to the scandal, saying that he was heading for Washington "handsome and tanned" himself.

His own response to the wave of criticism that greeted his comment in November was incomprehension: "How can you take such a great compliment negatively?"

So, is there any unease in Italy that the prime minister will offend his host in Washington?

Some Italians are "extremely concerned" says James Walston, professor of international relations at the American University in Rome - but a roughly equal number are quite relaxed about the prime minister's occasional lapses into political incorrectness.

"He always does it, whatever his minders try and do - they cannot control him when he starts ad-libbing, and he loves it.

"But a lot of his supporters think it's great. They thought the 'sun-tan' remark was either funny, or quite appropriate.

"A week ago he said Milan was an 'African town' just because there are a lot of non-white faces there. His supporters in [the Berlusconi party] Forza Italia thought that was fun.

"It just shows how polarised Italian society is."

Beppe Severgnini, columnist for Corriere della Sera and author of La Bella Figura - A Field Guide to the Italian Mind, thinks the risk of a PR disaster in Washington is low.

'No racist'

He points out that Mr Berlusconi does not speak English, Mr Obama does not speak Italian, and they will only meet for one hour to discuss preparations for the G8 summit, which Italy is hosting next month.

"The problem is that he never considers what other people, especially abroad, may make of what he says... He doesn't have the necessary sensitivity and he doesn't care about other people's sensitivity, which is what drives so many people crazy around the world."

Maria Sanminiatelli of the Associated Press points out a "striking contrast" between the gaffe-prone Mr Berlusconi and a US president "with a reputation for phenomenal self-control - hence his nickname, 'No Drama Obama'."

Mr Obama has also shown that he can take Mr Berlusconi's sometimes unpredictable behaviour in his stride.

While the Queen gave the Italian PM a ticking off at April's G20 summit in London - for shouting to get Mr Obama's attention - photographs show Mr Obama looking relaxed with the prime minister's arm around his shoulder, in a pose for the cameras.

Italian media also reported that Mr Obama and Mr Berlusconi had a "long cordial" telephone conversation, within hours of the "sun-tan" gaffe in November.

Professor Walston says the meeting is an important one for Mr Berlusconi, the third EU leader to be received by Mr Obama in the White House, after Gordon Brown and Brian Cowen.

A statesmanlike performance could help him burnish his image at home, after a series of awkward news stories:

• An investigation into possible misuse of the official prime ministerial jet, used to ferry guests to Mr Berlusconi's villa in Sardinia
• Publication of photographs in European media, showing men and women cavorting semi-naked at the villa
• Accusations from his wife, who has launched divorce proceedings, that he consorts with minors

The fact that Italy's political system allows Mr Berlusconi to take such blows without facing a challenge to his leadership is, for Italian writer Enrico Palandri, more worrying than any individual gaffe he might make in the US.

"Mr Berlusconi is going round representing Italy," says Mr Palandri, a professor at University College London.

"Even if he does badly he won't be in an embarrassing position - because we could not be in a more embarrassing position than we are now."

MILANO - Era uno dei militanti della canzone italiana. Ivan Della Mea è morto la notte scorsa all'ospedale San Paolo di Milano. Aveva 69 anni. Cantautore, poeta e scrittore nato a Lucca il 16 ottobre 1940, si era presto trasferito a Milano dove, insieme a Gianni Bosio, fu tra i fondatori del Nuovo Canzoniere Italiano, il cenacolo di artisti e intellettuali che ha segnato lo sviluppo della canzone di protesta italiana.

Nella lunga carriera di Ivan Della Mea musica e militanza nelle forze della sinistra sono unite sin dall'inizio. Le sue prime incisioni compaiono in Canti e inni socialisti, compilation prodotta nel 1962 per il 70° anniversario del Partito Socialista Italiano. La tradizione politica del folk italiano è stata sempre la sua costante ispirazione, sin dai primi lavori. Come Ballate della piccola e della grande violenza, lp uscito per l'etichetta discografica Dischi del Sole, la stessa di Giovanna Marini e Paolo Pietrangeli.

Negli anni '60 le canzoni di Della Mea e degli altri esponenti del Nuovo Canzoniere fanno da colonna sonora alle proteste degli studenti e degli operai. Del 1972 una delle sue canzoni più famose, Ballata per Ciriaco Saldutto, è dedicata a uno studente torinese morto suicida dopo essere stato bocciato.

La ricerca musicologica lo porta a confrontarsi anche con la composizione in dialetto. Sua la celebre El me Gatt, considerata una delle più importanti canzoni di protesta italiane.

La passione per la ricerca musicale lo porta negli anni '90 a dirigere l'Istituto De Martino, una delle istituzioni più prestigiose dell'antropologia musicale italiana.

Artista a tutto tondo, Ivan Della Mea ha avuto anche esperienza cinematografiche e letterarie. Nel 1969 partecipa alla scrittura della sceneggiatura di Tepepa, cult movie dello spaghetti western interpretato da Tomas Milian e Orson Welles. Con Roberto Benigni partecipa nel 1979 a I Giorni Cantati di Paolo Pietrangeli. Tra le sue opere letterarie Il sasso dentro del 1990 e Sveglia nel buio del 1997. Per Jaca Book era uscita quest'anno la sua autobiografia Se la vita ti da uno schiaffo. Giornalista pubblicista ha curato rubriche per L'Unità e per Liberazione e ha collaborato a lungo con il Manifesto.

Iscritto per la prima volta al Pci nel 1956, Della Mea aveva sempre seguito con attenzione il dibattito interno alla sinistra italiana. Nel 2007, in una dura requisitoria contro l'allora presidente della Camera Fausto Bertinotti, aveva scritto: "Noi siamo stati l'etica della sinistra, quella che è stata distrutta nel nome della ragione di partito. E' questo l'errore più grave che non abbiamo saputo o voluto vedere". In una delle ultime interviste, rilasciata a Liberazione il 15 maggio scorso, Della Mea aveva svolto una riflessione sugli obiettivi comuni della sinistra italiana: "Credo sia molto importante combattere a fondo contro il berlusconismo, perché è trasversale, tocca tutti, sia a destra che a sinistra. C'è bisogno di politica vera, fatta per strada, che venga fuori dalle proprie stanze".

Alcol e caffè al bando nelle tendopoli Ecco il nuovo menu della protezione civile

L' AQUILA - Il caffè, la cioccolata e il vino, per gli sfollati del terremoto, sono severamente vietati. Lo ha stabilito la Protezione Civile, con una circolare. La direttiva (numero 15277) è stata inviata, appena quattro giorni fa, dal vice capo del dipartimento ministeriale, Bernardo De Bernardinis, a tutti i centri operativi che gestiscono le 180 tendopoli. Niente bevande alla caffeina (quindi il divieto è esteso anche a prodotti come la Coca Cola), niente alcolici e niente cioccolata. E poi: «Devono essere aboliti - si legge nel documento ufficiale - insaccati, carni grasse, dolci alla panna, salse in conserva e sughi elaborati». La Protezione Civile (che si prepara a gestire una difficile estate nelle tendopoli, anche per la concomitanza con il G8) sembra abbia messo a punto una specie di "dieta dello sfollato". Una dieta a base di carboidrati e frutta ad alto contenuto idrico (come meloni, cocomeri e pesche). Eliminando di netto, dal menù giornaliero, sostanze potenzialmente eccitanti. «I pasti - continua la nota - devono essere sufficientemente differenziati nell' arco della settimana, tenendo presente che non deve mai mancare la possibilità di usufruire quotidianamente di un primo in bianco (riso o pasta) e, almeno bisettimanalmente, di una zuppa o minestrone. Alimenti vegetali, contenenti fibre, devono essere serviti preferibilmente cotti, e per quelli da servire crudi, bisogna curarne attentamente la nettezza». E poi ancora: «L' acqua, possibilmente fresca, ma non gelata, può anche essere moderatamente gassata e distribuita in quantità sufficiente a coprire un fabbisogno di almeno 1,5 litri pro capite al giorno». E così la circolare è entrata in vigore nelle tendopoli scatenando alcune reazioni di protesta, specie per il caffè negato a colazione. Il no ad alcol e caffè non è l' unico divieto in vigore. Nelle tendopoli sono vietate anche manifestazioni e assemblee pubbliche, come dicono al comitato 3.32 dopo aver incassato il no al permesso per una loro iniziativa. Segnali di fermento arrivano anche dagli alberghi della costa. A suscitare malcontento, è il censimento da parte dei carabinieri di tutti i terremotati ospiti nelle strutture, per verificare che i possessori di case agibili, rientrino "immediatamente" nei loro appartamenti. «Chi non lo farà, verrà considerato abusivo e denunciato», è scritto nei cartelli affissi negli alberghi. - GIUSEPPE CAPORALE

Il direttore di El Pais spiega di aver pubblicato le foto di Villa Certosa perché «il diritto di vederle era stato negato ai lettori italiani» e che «ogni informazione che riteniamo utile e rilevante per il dibattito politico, in Spagna o nel mondo, abbiamo l'obbligo di diffonderla». Al direttore «è sembrato un grave abuso utilizzare la procura per fare in modo che gli italiani non potessero vedere le immagini». Inoltre secondo lui, «ciò che le foto trasmettono» è «quella confusione tra la sfera pubblica e privata, una sorta di miscuglio immorale, che sta degradando lo Stato democratico in Italia». «Basta vedere la sua reazione sempre più furiosa - aggiunge - per capire che la vicenda lo può danneggiare», non tanto, però, «a breve scadenza e dal punto di vista elettorale, quanto, osserva, »a livello di immagine internazionale».

Anarchico aggredisce La Russa. Senatore del Pdl lo prende a pugni.

Contestazione contro il ministro della Difesa Ignazio La Russa, a Genova per la campagna elettorale. Il ministro stava visitando il centro storico quando un uomo, un cittadino spagnolo, gli si è avvicinato e ha cercato di aggredirlo. L'uomo è stato subito fermato dalla polizia. Nel tentativo di difendere il ministro dall'aggressione il senatore Giorgio Bornacin ha sferrato un pugno all'aggressore, mentre gli uomini della scorta lo mettevano in un angolo contro la vetrina di un negozio.

La Russa era arrivato poco prima davanti alla Commenda di Prè, dove lo aspettavano il presidente del municipio Centro Est Aldo Siri, il parroco padre Maurizio e alcuni esponenti del partito. Il ministro ha visitato alcuni negozi di via Prè, fermandosi a dialogare con i commercianti, molti dei quali stranieri. Poco dopo l'aggressione da parte dello spagnolo.

Nel marsupio dell'uomo i carabinieri hanno poi trovato due cacciaviti e un tronchese. L'aggressore è stato accompagnato in caserma per l'identificazione: si tratta di un anarchico spagnolo, S.J.A. sulla trentina, da anni residente in Italia, pluripregiudicato. L'uomo fu arrestato in passato per fatti analoghi a Bologna.

"Nel corso del giro ci avevano avvertito che c'era uno scalmanato - ha commentato il senatore Bornacin - per questo volevo che finisse presto. E ora mi chiedo se ci sia venuto da solo o se lo abbiano mandato. Siamo in un'Italia dove un ministro della Repubblica viene aggredito in un centro storico. Questo non era avvenuto neanche negli anni più pesanti".

Il ministro La Russa ha minimizzato l'episodio e già in via Prè aveva esortato gli uomini della scorta a non fare del male al contestatore.

Il video di Rodrigo Rosenberg, 47 anni, avvocato guatemalteco ucciso domenica scorsa da due sicari, sta facendo il giro della rete in un lampo, a causa delle gravi accuse contro il presidente Alvaro Colom. Dopo la radio nazionale e You Tube, ora ne parlano anche giornali e blog, facendo cassa di risonanza alla notizia, come probabilmente egli stesso avrebbe desiderato. Wikipedia gli ha dedicato una voce aggiornata e diverse testate hanno pubblicato la trascrizione completa del discorso.

Alvaro Colom, by means of Gustavo Alejos and Gregorio Valdez asked Mr. Khalil Musa for his collaboration so he would form a part of the board of directors of Banrural in an ad honorem fashion, Mr. Khalil Musa did not suspect of the millionaire illegal businesses that are done every day in Banrural, those businesses go from money laundering to deviating public funds to inexistent programs of the first lady Sandra de Colom, as well as financing to shell companies used by drugtraffickers.

It is Alvaro Colom in agreement with Gustavo Alejos and Gregorio Valdez that retain the already signed appointment of Mr. Khalil Musa, without him knowing about it, for more than 3 months, because they did not have any intention of having him assume as Director, they only used his good name with the argument that if new power cuotas were not distributed Mr. Khalil would denounce, when he discovered, the corruption with which the general manager of Banrural, Mr. Fernando Peña, manages the bank at his own pleasure to the service of Mrs. Sandra de Colom and as a partner and financier with the bank´s funds of the businesses of Gregorio Valdez and Gustavo Alejos, without the President of the Bank, Mr. Jose Angel Lopez doing anything to prevent that Fernando Peña converts Banrural into the cave of robbers, drug traffickers and murderers it is today.

With the impunity that we Guatemalans have granted in the past years to the robbers and murderers in this country, Jose Angel Lopez, Fernando Peña and the coward Gerardo de Leon, in a direct fashion threaten and intimidate Mr. Khalil Musa, a few weeks before his and his daughter´s murder, so that he resigns his appointment and Mr. Khalil Musa tells them, as the gentleman he always was, that he had no problem if the appointment was cancelled, since whom asked him to accept the appointment was Gustavo Alejos and Gregorio Valdez in agreement with our splendid president Alvaro Colom and his permanent shadow Sandra de Colom.

Mr. Khalil Musa informs Gustavo Alejos and Alvaro Colom of his decision not to participate in the board of Banrural in order to avoid problems, but they told him to please give them time, since everything was resolved without having an idea that once the robbers and the murderers agreed he would be murdered along with his daughter Marjorie Musa (who´s only sin was to be an exemplary daughter that always accompanied her father) because he had already fulfilled his purpose, without caring about anything and with the complete tranquility of knowing that good Guatemalans, once again would do absolutely nothing, justifying their inaction in the impotence that hounds us or simply saying “they were surely involved in something”.

Without any principle or moral value and without the most minimum sense of shame, Gustavo Alejos personally, after trying to make up other hypothesis that nobody accepted because of the moral quality of those murdered, tells the family of Mr. Khalil Musa and of his daughter Marjorie Musa, that unfortunately they had been murdered because of the horrible problems that exist in Banrural, going so much so that the President Alvaro Colom himself invites a political relative of Mr. Khalil Musa to his office to confirm what had been said by his Private Secretary.

Now you can understand why neither Alvaro Colom nor Gustavo Alejos were not careful not to publically declare what they told the family of Mr. Khalil Musa and his daughter Marjorie Musa and gave the order to the incompetent and corrupt Ministry of the Interior and the inexistent Prosecutor General to leave, once again, this cowardly murder unsolved, as happens with all murders, robberies and violations that have our country plunged into its worst period.

Day by day this story is repeated and fills with pain one more family in our Guatemala, while good Guatemalans decide to look the other way and pray that nothing happens to us.

That´s enough, lets rescue our country from the robbers, the assassins, the drugtrafickers and let´s all together recover our Guatemala, our values and our faith in justice and kick out the current puppet we have for a president and put into jail the robbers and assassins, starting with Gustavo Alejos, Gregorio Valdez, Fernando Peña and Gerardo de León, among others, and once and for all demand the resignation of all current members of our congress, that with a very few and honorable exceptions are robbers and let’s start again for the love of God and our country.

Surely the cowards will defend themselves by trying to stain the memory of Mr. Khalil Musa or his daughter Marjorie Musa and will try to convince Guatemalans that all of this is a new plot, but in the end, the only truth that matters is that if you read this message it´s because I Rodrigo Rosenberg Marzano was murdered by Gustavo Alejos and Gregorio Valdez with the approval of Mr. Alvaro Colom and Sandra Colom for refusing to allow the most cowardly and vile murder of two incredible people as were Mr. Khalil Musa and his daughter Marjorie Musa it to become one more statistic, and continue to deliver my country to the cowardly assassins, robbers and drug traffickers that actually govern it.
